Knockoff Rembrandt - Chapter Six mystery thriller

CHAPTER SIX She knocked on the open door and called his name through the screen. Jake stepped out a moment later, two brand new flashlights still in the package and passed one to her. “Maggie coming?” Amanda asked as she popped open a flip blade knife and tore off the plastic from one light. Jake handed her the other to do the same. “I invited her.” “Good.” He stuck the flashlight in the back pocket of his pants and reached through the door to get a yellow stand with two wok lamps on a bar. He wrestled with it and a coiled extension cord for a moment, until Amanda took the bundle from him. He led her into the house and gave her the ten cent tour of the first and second floor. She made comments on the detail work, which he expected and her notes matched the ones he wrote down, along with a couple of suggestions for color schemes. “I thought you’d say black,” he told her. “Because of the bar?” He nodded. “Do you know how easy it is to clean bl

Knockoff Rembrandt - Chapter 5 Jake Burbank Mystery Thriller

CHAPTER FIVE “Then, I had to go to the store because every time I think I’ve got something, I remember I lost it in the fire,” he told Amanda the next day when she opened her bar. “I’d like to see it.” “Tomorrow,” he invited her. “Come take the tour.” “You should charge for tickets.” He sipped his bourbon and hated the fact that he liked being her more than he did at home. Or at trailer, since that was his home now. At home was a nice little metal sphere where all he thought about was coming to this bar and sitting on this stool and hanging out with this bartender. “How much do you have to do?” she asked, talking about the historic home. “All of it.” “That’s a lot of work.” “I’ve got a lot of time.” “And money?” she raised an eyebrow. “Not as much of that as I could use,” he shrugged. “But isn’t that the case with everybody.” “I could use more,” she told him. He lifted his glass. “Let me help.” “You haven’t had anyone come in here

Knockoff Rembrandt - Chapter Four Jake Burbank mystery thriller

CHAPTER FOUR Jake started thinking about Unc when he woke up. The familiar fog was there, the rushing throb of a headache that beat in time with his heart. He was so used to it by now that he only noticed when it was gone. He kept on thinking as he puttered around the trailer, moving from the queen size bed under the curved roof on one end to the full size sofa under the picture window on the other. Thirty feet or so, but the different space didn’t offer any clarity. He hated Sundays. Amanda kept the bar closed on Sunday. She said she needed a day off. And laughed when Jake asked for a key so he could go in and drink by himself. Told him he could drink at home, which he did, but it wasn’t the same. Nothing was. He could hear the cars on the road from here. The street wasn’t busy, just enough traffic to remind him he wasn’t alone. Hell, maybe he missed the sound of construction across the street. The damned real estate development had been go

Knockoff Rembrandt Chapter Two - a mystery thriller

CHAPTER TWO “We haven’t booked him yet,” the cop behind the desk told Jake. His name was Warner, a big corn fed boy that let a lot of muscle go soft sitting ten hours of his twelve hour shift. Warner had bored eyes and a slight sneer, like he’d seen it all and heard it all and nothing Jake said could persuade him. They had talked before. “If he’s not under arrest, I’m here to pick him up.” Warner grunted and ran the tip of a fat finger across the computer screen on the desk. “Says we’re transporting him to Little Rock.” “On an in town charge?” “That’s what it says.” Jake turned to Deonte. “That doesn’t make sense.” “Why they carrying him up to Little Rock?” Jake shook his head. “What else does it say?” “Says you can’t talk to him.” “It doesn’t say that.” “No,” said Warner. “I do. We’re bringing him out and putting him in the truck, so you need to clear out.” “How long?” Jake asked. He wasn’t panicking, not yet, but there were wh

Knock Off Rembrandt - Chapter One

KNOCK OFF REMBRANDT “I need your help.” Deonte’s voice on the phone in the dark of the trailer. Jake sat up too fast and came close to banging his head on the curved surface of the wood panels. His second home while he worked on a third, parked in the backyard of a historic home. “Where?” Jake mumbled. His voice was thick with whiskey, the after affects of it at least. He had closed down the honky tonk, as was his habit and knocked off the best part of a half gallon of Kentucky’s finest all by himself. A liter of water before passing out on the memory foam mattress pressed against his bladder. He hitched up and stumbled to the bathroom the size of a small closet, held the phone against his ear with one hand, and managed to aim with the other. “Got a problem down the jail,” Deonte said. “You?” That’s how they met. Jake in jail on a trumped up murder charge, and his big black friend in on something else. Both out a few hours later and a few dr

Do you like special treats?

I’ve got a special treat for you today. Remember when I told you I was going into audio books? The first one,  SUPER SECRET SPACE MISSION  is done, and if you want to test it out, I’ve got free codes you can use. There are only 50 though, so email me first and I’ll shoot it to you. The great thing about this code is, you can get a free trial for a month and listen to more great books. If you like it, keep it (like I did to listen while I run). If you don’t, just cancel at day 28. Either way, get on board so you can get this sci fi comedy and check out Carver and Dawes in what’s been described as Rush Hour meets Dumb and Dumber in Outer Space. The hardest part is waiting for the audio to be approved. I was going to roll out one title per week, but the process is out of my hands once it goes behind the curtains. So I’ll just announce them as they come, and you can grab them as you like. Don’t worry though, I’ve got a good bunch of books coming your way too, including

Are you ready for a Coronavirus Pandemic?

I’m not saying it’s a problem. Not yet. But it will be. And you don’t have to be an alarmist to see it. China lied. Their numbers are off by a factor of 15, if you only use the numbers coming from South Korea. 2000 dead x 15 = 30,000 dead. Probably more. Why? There’s too much we don’t know. How many exposed? How many treated? How many died but it was attributed to someone else? We don’t know anything. Except what the government is telling us. Which are lies. Here’s what we do know. They shut down a city.   So did Italy. South Korea is trying. Iran is a hotbed right now. The virus is on all continents. It probably won’t kill you. Even though we don’t know the survivability rate. You have to have real numbers to know that. The government is declaring martial law. They are shutting down and locking down cities. They are keeping people off the streets. Which can happen here. Which can happen to y

Do you have a Secret to Control the World?

I haven't been on a grand adventure since 2015 and my soul is itching. No long runs to test the will, no overnight outings in the woods waiting to be kidnapped and turned into a Sasquatch mating toy. Or Grizzly chew toy. I missed floating within feet of a black bear eyeballing me for dinner and only realizing it a few yards downwind when the smell hit me.   Looking back over my shoulder into the dark soulless eyes of Teddy and seeing that he wondered how I would taste with a little sauce on the side. But I've been thinking about it. Wondering. Planning. Then it hit me. Cross Country Car Camping. And a video series to go with it. But let me give you some background first. I wanted to make movies once upon a time and even tried. I made a short film with my buddy Ryan that ended up winning an award. But like a lot of dreams in America, I let that one die because of dumb reasons. I listened to people who didn't want me to succeed

Can you make money writing short stories?

How long is a short story? Someone challenged me to write a short story per day for a week. Authors like to prove how fast our fingers can move, much like gunslingers in the Old West would call out other shooters to check out their pistol skills. I've been in a 100k words in a month challenge, the always fun NANOWRIMO in November where everybody is encouraged to write their first novel, or third, or more. And I've even challenged myself to get work done, to finish faster and get stories out there, especially when I get an email or review from a reader who says they're waiting! But a wor dslinger called me out on writing shorts for a week. The challenge was, "Can you write a short story per day for seven days?" I thought, man, that would be fun to try. Especially if I got out four prequels in the Z series, and 3 sci fi shorts that have been lingering on my to do list. But then I had a thought.   I have over a dozen novels that are

What's Holding You back from your Dreams?

I had a weird dream last night.    It's not the first time.    As I come up on the one year anniversary of my divorce from Corporate America, I dreamed I was back at the company.    What I liked about being back at work?   Steady paycheck.   Comfort in the routine.   The people. Most importantly the people. What I hated about the dream? Routine.   Trapped.   Held hostage for nine hours a day by an idiot boss. The steady paycheck wasn't enough to offset the loathing I felt having to suffer through days filled with pointless meetings where we met for meeting's sake.   We weren't allowed to have fun, because laughter was considered "not working." Ridiculous. I wish I wouldn't have waited.   I wish I would have started this journey in 2009, just like I planned. But you know what they say about plans.   Man plans and God laughs. There is always a price for waiting.   You have to determine if you are willing to pay it
