What are you reading this weekend?
I thought about you as I went to sleep last night.
Those words can be good or bad.
It brings to mind a lot of questions.
Most important?
What did you think?
How did you think?
A simple phrase designed to let you know you were on my mind
can create a lot of anxiety.
I was thinking about what to tell you today.
About the books I’d have for you.
About the book I’m writing for you.
I was thinking about sharing some inside information with
you.
About how excited I am today for this brand new world we are
waking up in.
I was this excited four years ago.
New things, even if they are more of the same, can get me
worked up.
Even if I know they don’t matter.
Here are a few things I do know.
If you know ten people, it follows a pattern.
One loves you. Unconditionally.
Three Like you.
Three are indifferent.
And three of them don’t like you. One of them could even hate you.
If you go up to one hundred people, it falls into a 10, 30,
30, 30 = 100 category.
And so on, all the way up.
I can’t remember where I read that study.
But when I think about how I know, it feels true.
When I talk to people about their likes and dislikes, it
seems true.
When people try to talk to me about politics, it…
Well, I don’t let people talk to me about politics because
it seems to be hypocritical preaching most of the time.
But the numbers seem true.
30 are happy. 30 are indifferent. 30 hate. And 10 love.
When I was in corporate America, I asked a question when my
team brought up a problem.
Who does it affect?
What I meant was, “is the thing you are pointing out a
friction point for you? For our customer?”
And how many did it effect?
Sometimes, we get worked up and try to solve problems for
10% of the population, and ignore the 30% in the middle.
That’s not just politics, by the way.
That’s a lot of things.
Things people get very worked up about.
Ever argue with a Star Trek person (Trekkie, Trekker) about
how Harry Potter teamed up with Han Solo to storm the castle at Mordor?!
Or who would win in a fight, Jack Reacher or Jason Bourne?
Folks got opinions!
Here’s mine:
What makes you happy?
I’m a centrist, which means I live in a world of middles.
I try to fill my world with things I think are right,
things I enjoy,
things that won’t hurt other people.
I am indifferent about a lot of things, except those things
I am not indifferent about.
Except when I’m an optimist.
Sometimes that is the toughest thing to be.
Always hoping for more. Always hoping for better.
Working and trying to make the small world we create
together a better place.
Tonight, when I go to sleep, I may think about you again.
I won’t tell you if it’s dirty or not.
Cheers,
Chris
