I Told Him Crypto Was The Future

I told him crypto was the future.

He was sixteen and agreed.

What I liked about talking to this young man was his outlook on life.

He had an idea and wanted to talk to me about it.

“You know how VR is going to take over gaming?”

I nodded.

I think it will. I don’t think we’re there yet, but in five years, it will revolutionize in home entertainment.

I bet VR will be to now, like Nintendo was to Atari in the 80’s and 90’s.

He said the same thing after he asked what was Atari?

His idea was simple and amazing.

Instead of watching videos in class about historical enactments, put on glasses and be inside the enactment.

It tied into an idea of mine to put on glasses to sit on the fifty yard line at the Super Bowl, or behind Home Plate and Fenway.

We shared ideas and he came up with a bunch more.

Like in-app purchases.

Have you ever played Fortnite?

A player can buy things inside the game to use in the game.  Skins (costumes to play as something or someone else), Weapons. Songs. Dances.

All cost V-bucks, and all work inside the game.

It’s a whole eco-system.

We talked about a resale option inside Fortnite, or in app purchases inside VR simulations.

This isn’t us making stuff up that’s brand new, it’s already happening.

Just not at scale.

I told him it will be scaled in five years, and we’re starting a company to get a good position on it.

Me, partnering with a sixteen year old.

His mom listened to us and signed off on it.

Even offered to give us seed money, which is directed toward his buying and learning VR components, plus research on how to build, grow or hire people to do it.

“Homework?” he sighed.

I laughed. Told him the homework never stops, but it gets better.

Because as you grow, you get to study what you want and what’s useful, not a curriculum designed by a panel of educators.

Like Crypto.

I bought Bitcoin in 2014.

Not much, because I didn’t understand it.

But I have it. And it’s sitting pretty now.

I waited until this year to buy Dogecoin.  A joke crypto, but it was less than a penny a piece.

I put in $30 bucks.

Which has turned into $175 - $200 depending on the time of the day.

Mark Cuban and Elon Musk are talking about it.  People can use it to buy tickets to a basketball game or to send stuff on Space X.

I think it’s going to grow some more.

My homework has been about which coins are going to grow, and I pretend I’m putting money in a slot machine.

It’s all speculation, cause nobody knows nothing.

But when it hits, you can make a little money. Or a lot in some cases.

Like businesses.

I have a media and publishing company with ten series on the books.  I have plans for 100 plus more projects out over the next 18 months.

Expansion into Audible, plus Youtube and TV and Movies and Games.

But not all of the projects will work.

You hedge your bets by trying, by learning, by improving each time.

Same with Crypto.

Same with VR.  Some folks will hate the Civil War reenactments. The Indian Wars, The Trail of Tears, the Civil Rights Riots.  WWII will be popular, but Vietnam and Iraq will not.

These are my bets.

What are you betting on?

What do you want to study?
