Phalanx - Prequel to the Invasion Earth Series

Prisoners used as soldiers. More like cannon fodder. When the aliens popped up this side of the asteroid belt, earth panicked.  All the petty wars and disputes on the planet were forgotten as they faced a new threat from outer space. There were no space marines.  There wasn't a space navy.  No one was prepared. A committee had a bright idea.  The poor had always fought the wars before. Why not fight the aliens too?  Empty out the prisons, ship them off to the Red Planet and leave them to stop the alien menace.  It's a holding mission, buying time while the real soldiers train for space combat. A young kid was in the wrong place, wrong time. Just being homeless was enough to get picked up and shipped off. He's dropped in the middle of a firefight and has to learn to survive.  Assigned to a platoon with a by the books commander, the new soldier gets to choose sides. Either one could get him killed.  Probably will since they have one mission.  Destroy th

Can anyone be creative?

Image
We can't all be creative, can we? I had someone ask me that question the other day.   It was in their defense of not participating in an entire story I created in voices, dialogue and back and forth with myself playing both parts of the conversation. This is something I've had lots of practice with.   Usually when I get into an argument with the voices in my head, I win. But can we all be creative? Maybe not with words, but the answer is yes.   All of us.   All of the time in every way.   I could make a laundry list of items where folks are plenty more creative than me. Painting.   Unless it's paint by numbers, I'm always going to struggle. Composing.   I can write song lyrics that would make most lyricists weep in shame and horror, but I can only play two chords on the guitar.   Badly.   This, by the way, is one of my long term to do's that I keep putting off.   Why? I'm afraid of being ba

The one thing we can really control in life

On mornings like this, when the temperature is cool and the humidity low, I like to open the door to the back yard and listen to the world before it wakes up.  The house faces East/West, so as the sun creeps over the trees the light shines through the picture window and bathes the room in a golden glow. The coffee percolates and fills the room with the cinnamon tinted scent of promises yet fulfilled. The crows like to call in the morning.  On usual days, as most days must be, there are crows queued up on the fence crackling their call in an imperfect imitation of roosters.  I'll sit with an oversized cup of coffee in one hand and my brainstorm book in the other, practicing the items I preach in trying to capture dreams, and thoughts, and fragments left over from an overactive brain at night. This day was not usual. The song this morning was a sparrow, I think.  A tiny little gray brown bird that flittered around the screened in enclosure, r

How long do you want to wait to make your dreams come true?

Image
I had a weird dream last night.  It's not the first time.  As I come up on the one year anniversary of my divorce from Corporate America, I dreamed I was back at the company.  What I liked about being back at work?  Steady paycheck.  Comfort in the routine.  The people. Most importantly the people. What I hated about the dream? Routine.  Trapped.  Held hostage for nine hours a day by an idiot boss. The steady paycheck wasn't enough to offset the loathing I felt having to suffer through days filled with pointless meetings where we met for meeting's sake.  We weren't allowed to have fun, because laughter was considered "not working." Ridiculous. I wish I wouldn't have waited.  I wish I would have started this journey in 2009, just like I planned. But you know what they say about plans.  Man plans and God laughs. There is always a price for waiting.  You have to determine if you are willing to pay it

How big are your goals and dreams?

Image
I woke up with the urge to pontificate a little today. I've been chasing a MOONSHOT goal for the past year and I've learned a few things I'd like to share. Don't Wait to Chase your dreams. Know the Outcome first or start with the end in Mind.   If you know exactly what you want to accomplish, and focus on reaching that milestone, the clarity will help you reach the goal faster. I recommend writing down specifically what you want.   Be clear and precise. Then take massive action to get to it.   Massive action doesn't mean do it all in one day.   That will overwhelm your system.   Aim for a 1% improvement each day.   That's the key to a successful moonshot.   Just 1% each day will build the momentum to the massive action you need to reach the goal. But what if your actions don't work?   Adjust.   We've all heard the saying "What's the definition of crazy?   Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting differ

I've been thinking about The Beatles lately since watching a documentary series Tom Hanks produced about the sixties.  It's on Netflix now and you should check it out and the companion piece on the seventies, especially volume one which focuses on the role of television and the evolution of characters. The reason I'm thinking about the Beatles is because they're mentioned in both sets of the series and it's very interesting to watch how they changed over the course of a decade.  Their music evolved, and shifted from a simple three chord progression to layers of music that included influences from around the globe. What you learned from watching is the longer The Beatles kept at it, the better they got. They didn't start out being a supergroup.  In fact, they started out being a not so great group of guys learning to play together. What they ended up doing is influencing rock and roll, and even after they band broke up, continued to dominat
