Will you sign this for me?

“Will you sign this for me?” My shields went up. “Are you a cop?” I joked. Mostly joked. I added a smile to make sure she knew it was a joke. She took a step back. Sometimes I forget my smile and snarl look almost alike. “I saw you on tv,” she said and held out a book. One of mine. “I got it on Amazon,” she explained. “I wanted your autograph.” My autograph?!? I barely kept from looking around to see if she was talking to someone more famous behind me. I saw this happen before. Not to me, of course. A lifetime ago, when I worked in LA, I hung out with Mark Wahlberg’s crew for a bit, which meant lunch with the artist formerly known as Markie Mark a couple of times. Women would ask for his autograph all the time. That made sense. He was famous. Not as much as he is now, but back then, he had a couple of movies under his belt and a hit or two. Plus they saw his Calvin’s. I didn’t even have Calvin’s.  ...

Planet 10 - The Dipole Series book 8 excerpt

PLANET 10 - The Dipole Series “So,” Tinker purred in a low smooth voice. “I’m gonna have to visit Uranus.” “Try saying it without wiggling your eyebrows,” said Mona Lisa. “Don’t think I can,” he raised his mason jar in a mock toast. “No love, just the thought of Uranus makes every part of me quiver.” “You’re not going to stop this, are you?” “Probably not,” he shrugged. “You could go with the smells-,” “The smell never bothered me.” “Or,” she ignored him. “You could have gone with so much more than juvenile jokes about my ass.” “What ass?” June Bug stuck her head through the cockpit door. “We’re going to visit Uranus,” Tinker said over his shoulder. “That is our mission.” “He’s making a play on words, the planet Uranus for your anus.” June Bug quirked up on eyebrow. “I see the confusion,” she corrected. “You are incorrect in your pronunciation.” “Your anus?” “It is Ur-a-nus.” “Yeah it is,” Tinker grinned. “That doesn’t even make sense.” ...

Can I have your autograph?

Someone asked me if I would autograph a book for them. At first I felt like looking around to see who they were talking about. Who me? But since the email was address to me, and it started out like a lot of Dear John letters, except this one said, Dear Chris, I thought there was a better than average chance they were asking me. Hmmm. I have always had a book tour planned out in the back of my mind, but a lot of my successful author friends tell me to just focus on the writing, and spend the gas/hotel money on getting better covers.   (Both of which I think is excellent advice.) But one writer told me she did something that I thought was neat. If someone wanted a signed book, she sent them to her FB page on Messenger and they worked it out there. Turns out, she was on to something because I responded to the email, and after making sure it was meant for me (it was!) we hooked up in FB and now, a signed copy of my book is on the way to her. Then I re...

Zurich - a travel adventure excerpt

Image
Flying from Dulles in Washington DC to whatever the name is of the international airport in Zurich I kept waiting for feelings of anxiety and nervousness.   I was hoping that this would be like the proverbial descent into stardom, that waiting masses of admirers would greet me at the gate, like the Beatles arriving at JFK, screaming my name and waving signs.    But I arrived alone, with no one to even greet me.   The porter did smile and the customs agent wished me a pleasant journey.             “What is the reason for your visit?”             “I’m going to hike around the continent and-”             “Pleasure,” he said.             STAMP.   He hand...
